The short answer
For personalised Christmas gifts on Zazzle, start with Coffee and Paper co. for photo mugs and minimal designs, Kat Fusinski Design for pet stockings and pet mugs, About Happiness for gift wrap that matches the present, and Farlane Design Co. for funny photo mugs. The shop changes the design, not the price: a ceramic ornament lists at $17.90 to $18.90 whoever designed it.

On gifts, the shop changes the design, not the price
On Christmas cards the designer you pick moves the price. A 5x7 card lists at $2.40 with one shop and $3.21 with another, as we found for our Christmas card picks.
On gifts it barely moves at all.
Every ceramic photo ornament we saw listed at $17.90 or $18.90, and standard photo mugs sat between $16.85 and $18.70. The product carries the price; the designer's royalty is a dollar or two on top. So the choice below is about whose designs you like and whose range covers what you need, and only a little about money.
The sale is different too. On 26 October Zazzle was taking 40 percent off standard cards and 15 percent off most gifts.
How we counted four gift pages
A gift on Zazzle can be a mug, an ornament, a stocking or a pillow, and each has its own category. So we read the store behind every product in four places on 26 October, all in the Popular order: the first 180 on the Christmas gifts page and the first 120 on each of the Christmas mugs, ornaments and stockings pages. That is 540 slots.
We took out what is not an independent designer. Zazzle's own blank templates and in-house studios came out, and so did two licensed brand stores, Dr. Seuss and Peanuts, which held 11 slots between them on the gifts page.
Presence is our stand-in for a sales record, because Zazzle publishes no rating for a shop. The order shifts a little on every load. We compared the shops' published ranges and did not order from them; Zazzle prints everything, so quality does not differ between them. More on our method at how we rate.
Best overall: Coffee and Paper co.
Best overall: Coffee and Paper co., because it holds more of Zazzle's Christmas gift shelf than any other independent shop by a wide margin.
It had 27 of the first 180 slots on the gifts page and 12 of 120 on the mugs page. The next independent shop on the gifts page had 12. The range is built around photos and a quiet style: watercolour pine, one line of script, a family name. A multi-photo family mug lists at $18.70, a single-photo script mug at $17.70, and the same look runs through aprons at $29.60 and photo throw pillows at $53.95.
The practical advantage is the match. The same designer is one of our card picks, so a family can send the card and give the mug in one design without hunting for a lookalike.
Its weak spot is stockings. It barely appears on that page.
Best for pet lovers: Kat Fusinski Design
Best for pet lovers: Kat Fusinski Design, because it is the only shop near the top of all four gift pages and its range is unusually good at pets.
Six slots on gifts, four on mugs, five on ornaments, six on stockings. Nobody else spread that evenly. The stocking that reaches the top of its page carries a cat's photo and name and lists at $28.50, and there are pet photo mugs from $16.85. The rest of the range is the elegant side of Christmas: calligraphy, plaid and red holly, as on a two-tone "Holly Jolly" mug at $17.80.
Kat Fusinski has sold on Zazzle since 2009 and holds the Diamond tier, the top of Zazzle's designer programme. If you are buying three different kinds of present, this is the shop where all three are likely to exist in one style.
Best for matching gift wrap: About Happiness
Best for gift wrap: About Happiness, because it sells the wrapping, tags and ornament in the same design as the present.
The store sits at the web address "lovepattern", which is the only confusing thing about it. It held 12 gifts slots and five on mugs. Its Christmas range is unusually strong on what goes around a gift: a roll of watercolour pine wrapping paper lists at $25.70, a pack of sheets at $9.15, and gift tags at $9.85. A photo travel mug is $30.00 and a first married Christmas ornament $18.90.
Wrapping paper is the dearest way to add a personal touch on this page. A $25.70 roll costs more than the mug it covers, which is a fair thing to know before it goes in the basket.
The designer holds the Silver tier and gives no location beyond the United States.
Best funny photo gifts: Farlane Design Co.
Best funny photo gift: Farlane Design Co., because its elf mug, which puts a child's face on an elf, sits among the Popular Christmas mugs on Zazzle.
Farlane is a small stationery studio in the Hudson Valley at the Pro tier. It had six slots on the mugs page and four on ornaments. The elf mug lists at $16.85, among the cheapest mugs we saw. The serious side of the range is newlywed and family photo ornaments at $18.90 and a family name hoodie at $51.85.
It barely registers on the general gifts page. Farlane is a pick for one kind of present done well, not for a whole list.
Also considered
Jenn's Doodle World, in Orange County, held eight slots on the stockings page with cartoon dog breeds and cats. For a dog owner it beats our pet pick on character, but its range outside stockings rarely reached the top.
Guava held five gifts slots with photo jigsaws at $23.95 and photo snow globes at $15.35. The products are good gift ideas; the designs are plainer than the four above.
Orabella Prints, our best overall for cards, appears here only among the ornaments.
What to check before you order a gift
Proofread the name. Zazzle's standard return promise covers its own mistakes, not a misspelt name you typed into the template. Only the paid Worry-Free option covers a change of mind, and its price is not published. The rules are in our Zazzle review.
Plan for production and shipping separately. Zazzle quotes US Standard shipping at four to seven business days, and that clock starts after the item is made. For a mug or an ornament to arrive before Christmas, order in the first week of December, earlier if it goes abroad, where Standard shipping from zazzle.com takes 9 to 18 days and comes without tracking.
Ignore the saving label. The 15 percent is measured against Zazzle's Comp. value, which its own policy describes as prices on other websites. We explain it in the Zazzle review.
