Gemini review

The cheapest paid entry in the category, and a $19.99 tier that is really a bundle.

BRecommended with a reservation

The verdict

The best value in the category on a straight price comparison, with one reservation: the default is that Google keeps your chats for 18 months and trains on them, and several of the features that justify the Pro price are US only.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month, the cheapest paid tier of any assistant in this comparison
  • Google AI Pro bundles 5 TB of storage, YouTube Premium Lite and Google Home Premium Standard into the $19.99 price
  • Every paid tier is shareable with up to five other people
  • Flow and Flow Music credits are published as exact monthly numbers on all four paid tiers
  • Turning off Keep Activity cuts retention from 18 months to 72 hours and stops training use

What does not

  • Chats are used to improve the models by default, kept for 18 months, and kept up to three years when they go to human review
  • Gemini usage is published only as a multiple, 2x on Plus and 4x on Pro, with no absolute number on any tier
  • Chrome auto browse, Deep Search, the Gmail AI Overview and Gemini Agent are US only
  • No consumer tier lists API access, business use is a separate Workspace purchase, and no tier offers annual billing

In more detail

Four tiers, and only one of the steps is really about Gemini

Google sells four consumer AI tiers. Plus at $4.99 per month, Pro at $19.99, and two Ultra tiers at $99.99 and $199.99. Storage runs 400 GB, 5 TB, 20 TB and 30 TB across them.

Read the steps by what they buy and only one is an assistant upgrade. Free to Plus buys storage and a stated two times the baseline Gemini access. Plus to Pro is the real one: four times access, Gemini Spark, expanded Deep Research, and expanded coding limits in AI Studio, Antigravity and Jules. Pro to Ultra buys allowance, Deep Think and Project Genie. The two Ultra tiers differ by allowance, by ten terabytes of storage, and by which YouTube and Home subscriptions come attached.

So for most people the decision is Plus against Pro, and it costs fifteen dollars to find out.

The bundle is the product, so do the arithmetic

Gemini scores 8.3 here, and the value criterion is doing most of that work. Pro is the same price as a ChatGPT or Perplexity subscription, and it also carries 5 TB of storage, YouTube Premium Lite, Google Home Premium Standard, Google Health Premium and ten dollars a month of Google Cloud credits.

That is either a bargain or a distraction, and which one depends on a question about you rather than about Google. If you already pay for cloud storage and an ad-free YouTube, Pro replaces two line items and the assistant is close to free. If you do not, you are paying full price for an assistant and being handed things you will not open.

Do the subtraction before you sign up. It is the only honest way to compare this against ChatGPT at the same money.

What Google publishes as a number, and what it publishes as a multiple

Parts of this pricing page are admirably precise. Flow credits are 200, 1,000, 10,000 and 25,000 a month by tier. Cloud credits are ten, forty and one hundred dollars. Storage is exact.

The Gemini allowance itself is not a number anywhere. It is two times and four times access, and Google never publishes the baseline being multiplied. Access to the Pro models, Deep Research and Notebook usage are graded as more, expanded, higher and highest.

That is not unusual in this category, which is why we looked at the whole field of best AI assistants on the same question. It still means you cannot work out whether Plus covers your month until you have bought Plus, and it is the main reason this page does not score higher on trust under how we rate.

Eighteen months by default, and three years if a human reads it

This is a purchase fact rather than a privacy footnote, and it is the part most write-ups of this product leave out entirely.

The setting is called Keep Activity and it is on unless you turn it off. While it is on, your chats are used to develop and improve Google services including training generative models, and they are kept for eighteen months by default. Chats selected for human review are held separately for up to three years.

Turn Keep Activity off and retention drops to seventy two hours, and the chats stop being used for training. Off does not mean gone immediately, and it does not reach back to what was already kept.

A default that has to be switched off is a default most people never switch off. If the work is confidential, deal with the setting on the day you subscribe, or pick a vendor whose default runs the other way: Microsoft Copilot does not train on prompts on any tier.

The features in the marketing may not exist where you live

Read the plan page carefully and a pattern appears. Chrome auto browse, Deep Search in AI Mode, the Gmail AI Overview and the Gemini Agent mode are all marked US only.

Those are not minor extras. They are much of what separates Pro from Plus in the marketing copy. A reader outside the United States is being sold a tier partly on capabilities they cannot use, and the plan page states this in a footnote rather than in the comparison table.

Check the availability list for your country before you compare Pro against anything else. Google also prices this page by region, so the figures above are the US render and the number you see may differ.

Where ChatGPT and Claude still win

Gemini is the best value in this category and it is not the most capable thing you can buy at this price. ChatGPT covers more ground from a single prompt box and its free tier goes further before you have to decide anything. Claude includes a terminal coding agent and an agentic desktop worker, and on annual billing it costs less than Pro, which is more product per pound for anyone whose work is code.

There is also a structural point worth weighing. No Gemini tier offers annual billing, and no consumer tier lists API access, so the developer allowances here are graded quotas in AI Studio, Antigravity and Jules rather than an API key you can build against.

Who should stay free

If your use is everyday questions and the occasional image, the free tier covers it and the ceiling you will hit is generation and research volume rather than conversation. Pay when you hit that ceiling.

When you do, pay for Plus rather than Pro unless the storage is worth real money to you, or unless you are in the United States and the agentic features are the reason you are here. Fifteen dollars is a lot of margin to spend on limits nobody will state.

Prices and limits on this page were checked against the US render of the vendor pricing page and the Gemini help centre on . Everything else we score in this category sits under AI tools.

Gemini questions

How much does Gemini cost?
Free to use, then $4.99 a month for Google AI Plus, $19.99 for Google AI Pro, and $99.99 or $199.99 for the two Ultra tiers, as verified on the US render of the Google One AI plans page on 29 August 2026.
Is Google AI Pro worth it over Plus?
Pro quadruples the storage to 5 TB, doubles the stated Gemini access from 2x to 4x, and adds YouTube Premium Lite, Google Home Premium Standard, Gemini Spark and $10 of Cloud credits. If you would pay for storage anyway, the gap is smaller than $15.
Does Google train on my Gemini conversations?
By default yes. Keep Activity is on unless you turn it off, and while it is on your chats are used to develop and improve Google services including model training, with an 18 month default retention. Turn it off and retention falls to 72 hours.
What is the difference between the two Ultra tiers?
Allowance and storage. Ultra 5x is $99.99 with 20 TB and five times the Pro plan usage, Ultra 20x is $199.99 with 30 TB and twenty times, and only the top tier includes full YouTube Premium.
