The best payment mechanism here, and the shortest fuse
DHgate runs the clearest escrow mechanism in our comparison. Its own published flow is four steps: buyer pays DHgate, seller ships, buyer checks, DHgate pays seller. As it puts it, "The seller isn't paid until the buyer accepts the merchandise."
That is a genuinely strong position and it is why people recommend the platform. What almost nobody mentions is that the window to use it is much shorter than the number DHgate leads with.
DHgate scores 7.0 under how we rate and sits in our also-considered list.
Thirty days that are really seven or twenty one
The headline is thirty days after you confirm receipt, sixty if you are a VIP customer. Read a comparison page about DHgate and that is the number you will see.
Now the route that matters. Almost every real complaint is "item was not as described", and DHgate states that a buyer must open that dispute within 7 calendar days after the item delivered for one set of categories and within 21 calendar days for another.
Seven days. Not thirty. And the clock starts at delivery rather than at whenever you get round to confirming receipt.
Three more terms worth knowing. Before you confirm receipt, a dispute can only be opened after eight calendar days from dispatch, so there is a floor as well as a ceiling. Each customer gets one chance to open a dispute per order once the seller has shipped, which means a first attempt that goes badly is your only attempt. And there is a Green Shipping Protection service covering lost, delayed or damaged parcels, available to buyers in eight named countries.
Terms published as pictures
Here is the part that turns a design complaint into a consumer one.
The category lists that decide whether you have seven days or twenty one are published as images. So is the return and refund process article. There is no text to read, no way to search them, and no way for a screen reader to get at them.
We tried and we could not tell you which categories fall into which window. On a platform whose entire proposition is protection, a buyer cannot establish from the published terms how long their protection lasts.
That is most of what holds the trust score down, despite the clearest escrow mechanism on this page. The mechanism is excellent. The paperwork around it is not readable.
Return shipping is whatever the seller decides
There is no platform rule. Each listing carries its own return policy set by that seller, and one listing we opened read: "You may return this item for a full refund (excluding shipping charges)... Item must be returned... within 7 days of accepting the delivery." That is one seller's terms rather than a platform rule, which is exactly the point.
Free return exists only as an optional premium-service icon that some products carry and most do not.
Compare that with Temu and SHEIN, which both publish a platform-wide rule of one free return per order and then $7.99, or AliExpress, which publishes fifteen days of free return. At DHgate you have to read the seller's terms on every listing, and they differ.
The one thing in the buyer's favour: DHgate states that where the fault is the seller's, you can "return for a refund, or get a refund without returning", within 21 days of receipt. Raise the claim first and find out which one you are getting.
Customs
DHgate collects EU VAT itself on goods up to EUR 150 and remits it, and above that "customer will be asked to pay the tax by themselves". On duties it is unambiguous: "Please note: Customs duties are never covered by DHgate."
Its guidance still splits at EUR 150, which stopped being the relevant line in July when the EU removed the duty relief. Its US tax article is written for resellers rather than consumers and makes no statement about sales tax at checkout. Neither gap is unique to DHgate, and all six platforms here are in the same position.
Who should buy it
Buy from DHgate at quantity, which is what the tier pricing is built for, and in the categories it is strong in: phone accessories, jewellery, apparel, anything where you want twenty rather than one.
Buy from it if the money being held until you check the parcel is worth more to you than a long window, because that trade is exactly what this platform is.
Do not buy one small thing here, where Temu is cheaper, longer-protected and easier. Do not leave the box for a week. And if you need to know the terms before you agree to them, this is the one platform on the page that will not let you.
Dispute windows, escrow terms, VAT treatment and the seller return policy quoted on this page were read from the vendor buyer protection and help centre pages on . We placed no orders and publish no delivery times.
